So as you visit the south coast of Crete, you may come across this magnificent canyon that starts in the heart of the mainland and ends in the magical Libyan sea, in the middle of the south coast of the island.
Over the centuries some three hundred hermits took shelter in its caves, completely isolated by the society and by each other! They only met once a year in the great cave and then they were aware of who died the previous year.
A 13th century church is still a standing witness of the past and have been renovated three times. The last renovations took place in the 14th and 15th century and gave the church its present form.
Outside the church there is a well that supplied the hermits with drinking water. It is still there and it’s cold water is really refreshing after your walk inside the canyon!
